Reading and discussing good texts is a pleasant way to enrich one’s vocabulary, learn new expressions and increase comprehension of a new language. This is the proposal of Escrevedeira Book Club, where you can read and speak English.
Short story of the month: Going to Meet the Man, James Baldwin
James Baldwin's famous short story, “Going to Meet the Man”, is an examination of the psychological aspects of the laws that enforced racial segregation in the south of the United States until 1965. The story is narrated from the viewpoint of Jesse, a white police officer, and focuses on theoppressive dynamic of that society.
New York-born James Baldwin (1924-1987), one of the 20 th century’s greatest American writers, is the author of an extensive body of work including fiction and non-fiction. He wrote novels, drama, poetry and essays, whose main
themes are racial conflict and sexuality and identity issues.
