Literature is an excellent ally for those who wish to improve their English language skills. Reading and discussing good texts is a pleasant way to enrich one’s vocabulary, learn new expressions and increase comprehension of a new language. This is the proposal of Escrevedeira Book Club, where you can read and speak English.

short story of month: The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860 –1935), was an American novelist and writer of short stories and poetry. She was a utopian and radical feminist in a time in which her actions did not match the usual attitudes of women.

Charlotte served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle.

Her most famous works are Women and Economics, a non-fiction book, the novel Herland and the short story The Yellow Wallpaper.

The Yellow Wallpaper is one of the most popular short stories written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, first published in January 1892 in The New England Magazine. It is regarded as an important early work of American feminist literature for its illustration of the attitudes towards mental and physical health of women in the 19th century. It is currently the biggest Feminist Press bestseller of all times.

Essa é a proposta do Escrevedeira Book Club, onde se lê e se conversa em inglês.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) foi uma escritora norte-americana, autora de romances, contos e poesia. Utopista e feminista radical em uma época em que suas ações não condiziam com as atitudes usuais das mulheres, Charlotte serviu de modelo para futuras gerações feministas por conta de seus conceitos não ortodoxos e de seu estilo de vida. Suas obras mais conhecidas são o livro de não-ficção Women and Economics, o romance Herlande o conto O Papel de Parede Amarelo.

O Papel de Parede Amarelo é uma das histórias mais populares de Charlotte Perkins Gilman.Publicado originalmente na edição de janeiro de 1892 da The New England Magazine, o conto é considerado um dos precursores da literatura feminista nos EUA, ilustrando atitudes da saúde mental e física da mulher no século XIX. Hoje é o livro mais vendido de todos os tempos da Feminist Press.
