A tarefa do tradutor é geralmente solitária. Mas não precisa ser assim. As práticas de tradução coletiva são muito antigas, desde a Septuaginta até modelos mais recentes, que incluem o Versatorium de Peter Waterhouse na Áustria e os programas “Your language, my ear”, das universidades da Pensilvania e de Princeton e, mais recentemente, na Armênia.  

Esta oficina de tradução presencial e com vagas limitadas reúne os participantes para traduzir, coletivamente, textos de Karla Kelsey e Alan Gilbert, aclamados poetas e críticos de Nova Iorque e recentemente publicados pela pequena editora Winter Editions.

Independente de experiência prévia, os participantes serão co-tradutores e terão a oportunidade de investigar nuances de tom e dicção, em inglês e em português, com a orientação e apoio do poeta, tradutor, professor e editor Matvei Yankelevich, em conjunto com o poeta e tradutor Alexandre Barbosa de Souza e a escritora e jornalista Angela Marsiaj, assim como os próprios autores de língua inglesa.

As traduções produzidas coletivamente serão apresentadas numa leitura de celebração no final da aula e, em seguida, serão publicadas no Substack da Escrevedeira, com o devido crédito. Este encontro permite abrir nossa própria língua ao som do outro, experimentar possibilidades de escrita colaborativa e aprender estratégias de tradução que alimentam e expandem nossa própria escrita.

The translator’s task is usually a lonely one. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Group translation practices date back to the Septuagint, and more recent models include Peter Waterhouse’s Versatorium in Austria, and “Your Language, My Ear” programs convened at University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and recently Armenia.

This in-person, limited-enrollment translation workshop, brings participants together to collaboratively translate text by Karla Kelsey and Alan Gilbert, acclaimed poets and critics visiting from New York City, and recently published by the small press Winter Editions.

Regardless of prior experience, participants will act as co-translators and will have the opportunity to investigate nuances of tone and diction, in English and in Portuguese, with the guidance and support of poet, translator, teacher, and editor Matvei Yankelevich, alongside poet and translator Alexandre Barbosa de Souza and writer Angela Marsiaj, as well as the English-language authors themselves.

The translations collectively produced during the workshop will be presented in a celebratory reading at the end of the afternoon and subsequently published on Escrevedeira’s Substack, with credit given to all participants. The gathering will allow us to open our own language to the sound of the other, to experience the exciting possibilities of collaborative writing, and to learn translation strategies that nourish and expand our own writing.
