ESCREVEDEIRA BOOK CLUB

com Vania Gomes

Literature is an excellent ally for those who wish to improve their English language skills. Reading and discussing good texts is a pleasant way to enrich one’s vocabulary, learn new expressions and increase comprehension of a new language. This is the proposal of Escrevedeira Book Club, where you can read and speak English.

short story of the month: Recitatif, by Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison (1931-2019) was an American writer, editor and professor who was the first black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1993. She also won the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Her powerful and sharp novels portray the experience of being a black woman in the U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries. Besides her numerous novels, Morrison also wrote non-fiction, children's books and a single short story, titled Recitatif.

Recitatif was initially published in 1983, in Confirmation: An Anthology of African American Women, edited by Amina and Amiri Baraka. The protagonists are Roberta and Twyla -- one is black, and the other is white -- who first meet in an orphanage for children. The story describes a series of encounters between them, throughout their lives. In this brilliant short story, Morrison removes racial codes from the narrative and never tells which is which, although racial identity is crucial for the entire plot.
