short story of month: The Artificial Nigger, by Flannery O’Connor
Flannery O’Connor (1925-1964), born in the South of the United States, is one of the greatest short story authors of modern literature. Her texts revolve around decaying characters, mostly in violent situations, and the issue of race often appears in the background. She used to say, 'anything that comes out of the South is going to be called grotesque by the northern reader'.
The Artificial Nigger is a short story by Flannery O’Connor published in 1955, in her short story collection A Good Man Is Hard to Find. The title refers to statues depicting grotesque characters popular in the Jim Crow era, when racial segregation laws were enforced in the South of the United States. The story features generational tensions and overblown egos in a context of racial prejudice.

O Negro Artificial é um conto publicado em 1955 no livro Um Bom Homem é Difícil de Encontrar, uma coletânea de histórias da autora. O título se refere às estátuas populares que retratavam personagens grotescas, na chamada era Jim Crow, período no qual foram decretadas leis que impunham a segregação racial no sul dos Estados Unidos. O texto aborda tensões geracionais e também egos inflados em um contexto de preconceito racial.
