Reading and discussing good texts is a pleasant way to enrich one’s vocabulary, learn new expressions and increase comprehension of a new language. This is the proposal of Escrevedeira Book Club, where you can read and speak English.
novel of the month: 'Girl, Woman, Other', Bernardine Evaristo
Bernardine Evaristo (1959) is an activist and Anglo-Nigerian writer, recognized, since the 1990s, as one of the most innovative writers in British post-colonial literature. Her works include novels, short stories, poems, essays and dramatic texts. Also having trained in the theater, Evaristo is currently teaching creative writing at Brunel University London, and serves as vice-president of the Royal Society of Literature. She has garnered various literary prizes, with books such as “Blonde Roots” (2008), and most recently the 2019 Booker Prize for her novel “Girl, Women, Other”.
'Girl, Woman, Other' (2019), a best-seller and hailed by specialized critics as a true contemporary milestone in English language fiction, was also considered one of the year’s best books by newspapers such as The Guardian, The Washington Post and by the magazines The New Yorker and Time. The plot is composed of stories that are set against a London that is hostile and divided in the wake of the Brexit vote, bringing together the voices of women who raise important reflections about machismo, racism and sexuality, and spanning the most varied social structures.
